Houses:
Tenants are responsible for heat and hydro costs at their unit, and for daily maintenance. Houses in the RNH Program have been designed to be energy efficient and relatively low maintenance.
Eligibility:
An applicant family applies for a house in the area where they are currently residing. For instance, if the family is living in Cavan Township, they will be considered for a house in Cavan Township. If they live in Lakefield, they will be considered for a house in Lakefield.
Both Native and non-Native clients are eligible for assistance through the Rural
and Native Housing Program.
The Rural and Native Housing Program was introduced by CMHC in 1974 to address the housing needs of low-income Native and non-Native families living in rural areas. For the purposes of the
RNH Program, a rural area is defined as having a population of 2,500 inhabitants or less. On-going community consultation with designated representatives is an important factor in ensuring the success of the program.
Houses in the RNH Program are commonly 3-bedroom, detached bungalows, although there are a number of 2-bedroom homes, and some 4-bedroom homes. Most of the houses have a basement area. A portion of the units in each area are also handicap accessible.
The RNH Program is designed to assist low-income families with dependent children in rural areas to obtain adequate and affordable housing.
